What is a farm insurance policy?

Farm insurance, also known as farm liability insurance and farm business insurance, provides coverage for property and liability risks unique to farms, ranches, and related businesses like wineries and wholesale nurseries. It typically includes coverage for the policyholder's home if located on the same property.

What's covered under a farm insurance policy?

Farm insurance generally includes coverage for

  • Farm dwellings, household contents, and related private structures
  • Farm barns, outbuildings, and structures
  • Farm equipment, supplies, grain, and livestock
  • Farm or other agribusiness products
  • Personal and farm-related liability (including farm product liability)

With Liberty Mutual, you can tailor your protection to the unique needs of your business with optional coverages.

Who needs farm insurance?

When you think of farm insurance, you probably imagine a small farm that grows things like corn, fruits, or grains, or a working ranch that keeps alpacas, cows, goats, or sheep.

While these businesses do call for farm coverage, there are many more situations where a farm insurance policy can provide much-needed protection a home policy doesn't offer.

  • Hobby farms differ from full-fledged for-profit farms. While hobby farmers might earn a little income on the side, they primarily operate their farms as a food source or to pursue recreational activities like horseback riding. These family farms still need protection from some of the same risks for-profit farms face.
  • Barndominiums are barn-styled standalone living spaces, typically with open floorplans and high ceilings, that accommodate both domestic and work-related activities. Even if owners do not use barndominium workspaces for non-domestic activities, insurance companies usually exclude these homes from standard home insurance policies.
  • Leased farmland presents both property and liability risks to the farmer holding the lease, even though they don't own the land. Farm insurance protects the farmer's personal property used and kept on the leased land from damage or loss while providing liability protection for any accidents that occur.
