What is Home Systems and Appliance Breakdown (HSAB) coverage for homeowners?
Home Systems and Appliance Breakdown coverage can help give you extra protection for your home from unexpected repair or replacement costs due to a mechanical, electrical, or pressurized system breakdown.
HSAB offers
- Affordable coverage: Up to $50,000
- A deductible (per occurrence): $500
How does Home Systems and Appliance Breakdown work?
In general, the Home Systems and Appliance Breakdown (HSAB) coverage works like home insurance. If your home equipment, like air conditioners, refrigerators, or furnaces, experiences accidental physical damage, HSAB can help cover the costs up to your policy limit after the deductible is applied. Remember, HSAB is not a warranty and doesn't cover regular wear and tear unless it leads to a covered “equipment breakdown” as defined by the HSAB policy.
All you need to do is file a claim. From there, we can either help you find a trusted repair company, or you can use your own. In either case, we'll walk you through each step to help you get back to normal.
Why do I need Home Systems and Appliance Breakdown coverage?
When household equipment breaks, it can require special diagnostic tools and skilled workers to make repairs. These costs can add up fast. HSAB coverage can also help cover the extra costs to speed up repair or replacement, getting you back to normal.
What is covered under Home Systems and Appliance Breakdown coverage?
HSAB coverage covers common appliances and systems used in your home, like
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Well pumps
- Home heating and cooling systems
- Water heaters
- Heat pumps
- Furnaces
- Electrical service panels
- Surround sound systems
- Clothes washers and dryers
- Televisions
- Swimming pool and spa equipment
- Garbage disposals
- Ovens
- Microwaves
- Dishwashers
- Computers and peripherals
- Home security systems
For eligible claims, HSAB can help with the costs to replace your covered equipment with ones more environmentally friendly, safer, or energy-efficient. We may cover up to 50% more than the standard replacement cost, if the new equipment has the same specifications. This benefit is subject to a policy sub-limit and does not increase your overall coverage limits or apply to items valued on an actual cash value basis. Please note, this benefit applies to replacements, not repairs.
If your home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered equipment breakdown, your base Liberty Mutual homeowners insurance policy may provide coverage for temporary living arrangements. Please note, this benefit is part of the standard policy, not the HSAB endorsement.
What is not covered under Home Systems and Appliance Breakdown coverage?
With HSAB, losses must be sudden, direct and accidental. Overall wear and tear - the natural deterioration of a machine's ability to perform its intended function - is specifically excluded from this coverage.
